One of the most common questions we get: "Why don't your numbers match what I see in Instagram Insights?" The short answer: they're measuring different things. Instagram Insights shows a snapshot of your recent audience activity (the last 30–90 days). influData's Audience Report analyzes your entire follower base — every single follower, not just those who were recently active. Both are valuable, but they answer different questions.
Instagram Insights = recent activity (30–90 days). influData = complete follower base (all time).
Different time windows and different populations measured leads to naturally different results.
Country, language, city, age, gender — for all followers AND for engaging users (likers/commenters).
Followers = "Who follows me?". Engaging Users = "Who actively interacts?". Insights = "Who was active recently?".
The fundamental difference is simple: Instagram Insights and influData's Audience Report analyze different populations of people over different time periods.
| Instagram Insights | influData Audience Report | |
|---|---|---|
| Data source | Instagram's internal analytics | Analysis of all public follower profiles |
| Population | Recently active followers + visitors | All followers (complete base) |
| Time window | Last 30–90 days | Cumulative (all time) |
| Scope | Activity-based sample | Full follower population |
| Includes non-active followers? | No | Yes |
| Available without creator access? | No (creator must share) | Yes (public data) |
When a brand sees "100k followers" on a profile, they want to know where all 100k are from — not just the fraction that was active in the last month. That's what influData's report delivers.
Instagram provides creators with a native analytics dashboard called Insights. This data covers the most recent 30–90 days and reflects audience activity during that window.
If a creator gained many new followers from a specific country in the last 30 days (e.g. through a viral reel or collaboration), Instagram Insights will strongly reflect that recent gain. But it won't show you the other 90% of followers who have been there for months or years.
influData's Audience Report takes a fundamentally different approach: instead of looking at recent activity, we analyze the complete follower base of a creator.
Where all followers are located, based on profile information and language signals
What languages followers use, derived from their profile and content activity
Top cities represented among the follower base
Estimated age distribution across all followers
Male/female distribution of the entire follower population
Breakdown of real people vs. influencers vs. suspicious accounts (Instagram only)
When you're paying for a collaboration, you're reaching the creator's entire follower base — not just the ones who were active last month. Understanding the full picture helps you make better partnership decisions and set realistic expectations for campaign performance.
It's completely normal to see different numbers. Here are the main reasons:
Instagram Insights covers recently active users. influData covers all followers. A creator with 100k followers might have only 30k–40k active in any given 90-day window. The demographics of the active subset can differ significantly from the total.
Instagram Insights is a rolling 30–90 day window. influData's data reflects the cumulative follower base. Recent audience shifts (viral posts, collaborations, giveaways) will show up strongly in Insights but may be diluted in the full-base view.
If a creator recently gained followers from a new country (e.g. through a viral post), Insights will overrepresent that country because the data is recency-weighted. The full-base view shows the actual distribution including the long-standing follower base.
Many followers follow an account and rarely engage. They still count in the total base — and they still see content in their feed. influData includes these; Instagram Insights does not.
Instagram assigns locations based on login signals (IP, device settings). influData derives location and language from public profile data. Travelers, expats, and multilingual users can create differences between the two approaches.
Think of it like a concert venue. Instagram Insights tells you who bought tickets in the last month. influData's report tells you everyone who has a season pass. Both are useful — but they'll give you different audience profiles.
How influData composes country and language values
Country and language percentages in the Audience Report are derived from analyzing public profile information of followers. Here's how they're composed:
A German fashion creator (100k followers) had a viral reel picked up in Brazil last month, gaining 5k new Brazilian followers.
The full-base view shows Brazil at ~5% (5k of 100k). Insights shows Brazil at 15–20% because those new followers are heavily active. Both numbers are "correct" — they just answer different questions.
Within influData's Audience Report, you can toggle between two views:
Demographics of the entire follower base. This shows you where all followers are from, what languages they speak, and how old they are.
Use this when you want to understand: "If I collaborate with this creator, who will potentially see the content?"
Demographics of users who actively engage with content — specifically those who like posts. This is a subset of followers (plus some non-followers).
Use this when you want to understand: "Who is actually interacting with the content?"
| Followers report | Engaging Users report | |
|---|---|---|
| Population | All followers | Users who liked recent posts |
| Size | Full follower count | Smaller active subset |
| Best for | Total reach potential | Actual engagement quality |
| Updates | When follower base changes | When engagement patterns change |
| Closest to Insights? | No — broader | Closer, but still different methodology |
A brand buying a collaboration reaches the full follower base (impressions), but conversions are driven by the engaging audience. If the engaging audience demographics are very different from the follower base, that's worth investigating — it could signal a bought audience or a shifting content strategy.
Neither data source is "better" — they answer different questions. Here's a guide:
"Where are the creator's followers from?"
Complete picture of the total follower base, regardless of activity.
"Where are the recently gained followers from?"
Insights reflects recent audience shifts more strongly.
"Who is actively engaging with content?"
Shows demographics of users who actually interact.
"Should I invest in a collaboration with this creator?"
Combine full-base demographics (who can you reach) with engagement demographics (who's actually paying attention) for the best decision.
"The creator says 60% Germany but your data says 45%. Who's right?"
The creator is likely reading Insights (recent active audience). influData shows all followers. The difference tells you that the long-standing base is more international than recent activity suggests.
Because they measure different things. Instagram Insights shows where recently active followers are from (30–90 day window). influData shows where all followers are from (entire base). If a creator recently gained followers from a new region, Insights will overrepresent that region. influData shows the full picture.
Both are accurate — for what they measure. Instagram Insights accurately reflects recent activity. influData accurately reflects the total follower base. The question is which perspective is more relevant to your use case.
Yes. Instagram may use device/app language settings, while influData derives language from profile and content signals. Multilingual users, expats, and travelers often appear differently depending on the methodology.
Because they still see content. Instagram's algorithm shows content to followers based on relevance, not just recent activity. A follower who hasn't liked a post in months might still see a story or reel in their feed. When you're evaluating total reach potential, the full base matters.
influData works independently from Instagram's Insights. Our data is based on analyzing public follower information, which allows us to provide audience demographics without requiring creator authorization.
influData periodically refreshes audience data. You can also request a manual refresh from the profile page. The timestamp on each report shows when it was last generated.
The "Followers" tab shows demographics of all followers. The "Likers" (Engaging Users) tab shows demographics of users who actively like posts — this is a subset of followers plus occasional non-followers who engage. Use Followers for reach assessment and Likers for engagement quality.
Explain that both data sets are correct but measure different things. Instagram Insights reflects their recently active audience (last 30–90 days). influData reflects their entire follower base. The difference is expected and both perspectives are valuable for making campaign decisions.
